FOMO is a MoFo

Hey, Reader!

Full disclosure, I'm writing this after having some invasive dental work yesterday - translation, if something doesn't make sense, I blame the anesthesia still being in my system πŸ˜‰....and the fact that planning and batching my emails is clearly not a thing.

Over a week ago, I made the decision that the monthly membership I was trialing, wasn't the right fit for me.

Which sucks bc the person running it is fabulous. An actual joy of a human.

However, what it doesn't make sense for my needs and focus right now...so I need to cancel it, which I haven't done bc see above for joy of a human.

Today, I was in the community, and I read about something they're going to be putting together for their members...you know, when I'm no longer a member. Cue the:

"I wonder what this will be?"
"Maybe I should stay in?"

I am locked into canceling. It does not make any sense for me to be spending a few hundo's a month on something I'm not using. Yet, my mind still wondered. Which made me pause ('thankfully!!' my wallet yelled), and think:

How often is fomo subconsciously the decisions?

To be very clear: there is no blame inferred to myself or the creator of the program. We're bombarded with so many messages all the time, and while there are absolutely people who intentionally use fomo in a harmful way, that wasn't the case with this creator.

It was self-surprising, though, to see how easily those thoughts came up.

How easily I almost changed my decision 🫣

Hence... mo'fo.

The next time you find yourself dealing with the FOMO, try this:

  • Remind yourself of your current plan for X topic is. eg for me, it was my marketing plan.
  • Ask yourself if the ShO (Shiny Object) supports that plan. Will it save you time, money, fill a gap you have, etc?
  • If no, that's your answer. It's just fomo being fomo.
  • If yes, and you're like me, then you can also ask yourself if this is a purchase you need to make now.

There's no right or wrong answer with this, either.

It's simply about bringing awareness to what's driving a decision -> if it's an intentional decision or a fomo-driven decision.

In my case, if I were to stay in the membership - knowing it's both not working logistically for me + being for something more tertiary in my marketing - it would be a fomo-only decision.

And I'm trying to do less of those these days πŸ˜‰

My stance on affiliate links + promos

I do my best to follow all the correct rules etc when it comes to clearly communicating when something is an affiliate link or not. When I use an * that means I may earn a commission at no cost to you if you buy that product or service. If I don't include an * that means I'm just sharing something I think you may like.

In general, I only share things that I would stand behind. That's not just a throwaway sentence. It may be old school, but if I put my name behind something or someone, it's because I truly believe in it. This includes bundles and summits I join.

Hey, Reader, I know you know this, but as I had to remind myself of this recently, I wanted to remind you. You can go viral, and not get a single client (or sale) Just like you can have a lot of: Followers Website visitors Discovery calls Downloads etc and not see the dial move in your business. The reason this happens is actually pretty simple It's that sometimes we (for sure me) can forget that the reason we're creating content, have a website, community, podcast, whatev - is to market our...

...is Context which might not be news to you. But more and more, I see people doing trainings and courses - paid and as lead magnets - without showing everything that contributed to their results. Because if the context of their situation is not the same as yours, then getting the same results might not be feasible or possible. and when we're searching for help, it's vitally important we know as much as we can, so we can make an informed decision. I'm by no means implying that not sharing...

Hey, Reader, If you're reading this, it means I (thankfully) sent an email. Which feels like a miracle, because over the past two weeks, I've started, deleted, went back to, etc more email drafts than I can count...bc I deleted them (here's proof from.) The reason is simple: I've been trying to follow too many smart people and strategies, and it gave me analysis paralysis. That's the downside of being someone who customizes strategy for her clients. I stay up to date on platforms, creators,...
